General information

In Russia (the Russian Federation) about 144.1 million people live on an area of 17,098,200 square kilometres. Russia is the largest country in the world in terms of landmass. It accounts for 11 per cent of the world’s total landmass, equivalent to Australia and Europe together.

Russia’s population belongs to about 160 ethnic groups, but the vast majority are Russians. The population is spread very unevenly, with 85 per cent living in the European part of the country, which accounts for only 23 per cent of Russia’s total territory. Only 15 per cent live in the vast Asian part of the country.

The capital city is Moscow.

The official language is Russian.
