General information

India (the Republic of India) is the second most populous country on Earth, after the People’s Republic of China. Its landmass of 3,287,000 square kilometres (a good nine times the size of Germany) is home to around 1.25 billion people (figures from the 2011 census).

The Himalayas form a natural border in the north of the country, as does the Indian Ocean in the south. Three island groups off the Indian sub-continent also belong to India.

The capital city is New Delhi.

The official languages are Hindi and English, but India also has 21 other recognised languages.
