Argentina

General information

The landmass of the Argentine Republic, at almost 2.8 million square kilometres, makes it the second largest country in South America. Only Brazil is larger. Its population, of around 41.8 million, ranks third in South America (after Brazil and Colombia). According to official statistics, more than 90 per cent of the population are descendants of European immigrants. Only a minority of Argentinians are descendants of the total of 30 ethnic groups who lived within what are today the borders of Argentina before the Spanish arrived.

A large percentage of the population live in and around the capital, Buenos Aires.

The official language in Argentina is Spanish. A number of other regional languages are also spoken by the indigenous population.
