China

General information

China (the People’s Republic of China) is the most populous country in the world, and the largest in East Asia in terms of area. After Russia, Canada and the USA, it is the world’s fourth largest country. Its landmass of 9,571,392 square kilometres (including Hong Kong and Macau) is home to around 1.361 billion people, about 92 per cent of them Han Chinese. China is also home to 55 minorities (including the Zhuang, Manchu, Hui, Miao, Uighur, Yi, Mongol, Tibetan, Buyi and Korean minorities).

China is divided into 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four municipalities directly under the central government and two special administrative regions.
The capital is Beijing.

Putonghua, or Standard Mandarin, is the official language. A number of other Chinese dialects and various minority languages are also spoken (including Mongolian, Tibetan, Uighur, Turkic languages, Korean).
